Our Products Use Java Technology »
All of our FTP products are based on Java Technology. In order to run our applets you need to have a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) installed on your computer.

Java Applet Technology
All our file transfer components are small Java programs that are automatically downloaded and executed on the client's computer. These small Java programs are called Java applets, and require a small browser plugin (similar to Flash or Shockwave) to be installed on the client's computer. Most systems already come with Java Plugin pre-installed with the operating system.

Java Server Technology
UnlimitedFTP Servlet, DocTera, and Files2U require installation on the web server. All these products require an additional server component that will allow your web server to run and execute Java Programs. These web server based Java programs are called Servlets or JavaServer Pages (JSP). If you are running Apache HTTP Server or Microsoft IIS, you can easily integrate Java by installing Jakarta-Tomcat on your exisiting server installation.

What is the Java Virtual Machine?
Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is a virtual machine that converts Java code into machine language and executes it on the target system. Programs written in Java can be supported on multiple operating systems (Windows, Unix, Linux, Mac OS, etc.) through a JVM. This is the reason why our applets can be run on many different operating systems.

How can I install a JVM on my system?
You can download a JVM from the Sun's java website for free. To get the latest JVM visit http://www.java.com.

Other providers of the virtual machine are Microsoft and Apple. The Microsoft virtual machine is discontinued. You can read more about it here: http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/

To download the Apple's MRJ (Apple's specific version of a JVM) visit http://developer.apple.com/java/download/

For Mac Classic (9.2 and below), Apple's MRJ can be found at http://developer.apple.com/java/classic.html

For the IBM z/OS server, you can download Java from IBM at http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/zseries/software/java/
